Biography

Mark Fletcher is a Lecturer in Medical Technology & Design at the University of Southampton. His research interests encompass cochlear implants, haptics, and virtual acoustics. Currently, he leads various projects aimed at exploring haptic stimulation to enhance speech, music perception, and spatial hearing for hearing-impaired listeners, including those who use hearing aids or cochlear implants. His work investigates the limits of human tactile and auditory systems, and he is focused on developing new haptic auditory assistive technologies, integrating physical engineering with digital signal processing techniques, including machine learning and artificial intelligence. Additional projects include the application of haptic devices to improve balance perception and realistic sound reproduction through virtual acoustics. Mark is also involved in the Health Effects Ultrasound Air (HEFUA) project, studying potential health impacts of high-frequency sound exposure. In terms of education, he teaches on the Fundamentals of Auditory Implants module and supervises undergraduate, master's, and PhD students on topics related to haptic technology and auditory perception enhancement.
