Biography

Mark R. Frost is an Associate Professor of Public History at University College London, where he specializes in the study of war, empire, and decolonization in modern Asia, as well as the role of popular memory in these contexts. He joined UCL in July 2020, previously working with the Asia Research Institute in Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Essex. Mark is an alumnus of the University of Oxford and completed his doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 2002. He authored 'Singapore: Biography' (2009; 2012, co-authored with Yu-mei Balasingamchow), which won the Asia Pacific Publishers Association Gold Medal in 2010 and was selected as an 'Outstanding Academic Title' by CHOICE. His significant contributions to public history include serving as Content Director and Senior Scriptwriter for the award-winning Singapore History Gallery from 2006 to 2015. Mark currently leads the 'War Memoryscapes Asia Partnership' (WARMAP) and has been involved in multiple documentary film projects, including the three-part series 'Remember Fall Singapore' (2017) and the feature-length documentary 'Scene Unseen' that premiered in 2021. He supervises students on topics related to public history, war remembrance, and European colonialism in modern Asia, guiding their research efforts through various projects.
