Biography

Mark R. Frost is an Associate Professor of Public History at University College London (UCL) since July 2020. His research interests include war, empire, decolonization, and modern Asia, particularly in the context of popular memory. Mark previously worked at the Asia Research Institute in Singapore, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Essex. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oxford and earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 2002. As an author, he co-wrote "Singapore: Biography" (2009, 2012, co-authored with Yu-mei Balasingamchow), which won the Asia Pacific Publishers Association Gold Medal and was selected as a CHOICE 'Outstanding Academic Title' in 2010. His professional contributions also include serving as Content Director and Senior Scriptwriter for the National Museum of Singapore's award-winning Singapore History Gallery from 2006 to 2015. Mark leads ongoing projects such as the ‘War Memoryscapes Asia Partnership’ and the ‘Living Violent Heritage: contests coexistence post-war Sri Lanka’ exchange. He is involved in exhibition design and documentary film ventures, including the television programs "Remember Fall Singapore" (2017) and "Love Time Change" (2018), as well as the feature-length documentary "Scene Unseen," which premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival in February 2021. In 2022, this documentary was selected for multiple international film festivals and won an award at the Bangkok International Documentary Awards Festival. Mark supervises students researching public history and war remembrance topics.
