Biography

Mark Gilbert is the C. Grove Haines Professor of History and International Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Europe. He holds a B.A. (Hons) in Politics from Durham University and a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Wales. Before joining Johns Hopkins, he was an associate professor of contemporary history and international studies at the University of Trento and a lecturer in European studies at the University of Bath. Gilbert began his academic career as an assistant professor of political science at Dickinson College. He has been the Associate Editor of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies since 2015 and served as Chair of the Cundill Prize jury in 2018. His research interests focus on Italian history and Italian-American relations. His latest book, 'Italy Reborn: Fascism and Democracy', is forthcoming. Gilbert has published numerous works addressing various aspects of political history, particularly in relation to European integration and the complexities of democratic governance. He is known for his engagement with contemporary political issues and his ability to convey an in-depth understanding of the historical roots that underpin modern political challenges in Europe.
