Biography

Mark Gillen has been a faculty member at the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria since 1987, beginning as an assistant professor and later becoming an associate professor in 1992 and a full professor in 2001. He specializes in Securities Regulation, Business Associations, Trusts, Tax, and Competition Law, with a particular focus on the historical foundations of common law. His primary research interests lie in securities law, trusts, and corporate law. Gillen has also served as a visiting professor at prestigious institutions such as Nagoya University in Japan in 2005 and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in 1999. He has authored and co-authored several notable legal publications, including 'Securities Regulation Canada' (4th ed., Thomson Reuters, 2019) and 'Waters' Law Trusts Canada' (5th ed., Thomson Reuters, 2021). In addition, he has contributed as a co-editor and author to multiple textbooks and legal literature. He is actively involved in various professional organizations, including serving as a board member and treasurer for the British Columbia Law Institute and chairing several working groups at the Uniform Law Conference of Canada.
