Mark Goulian is a Charles William L. Day Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses broadly on the mechanisms that bacteria employ to adapt to changes in their environment. His lab particularly centers on biochemical circuits that enable Escherichia coli and related bacteria to sense and respond to intra- and extracellular signals. Goulian is especially interested in how these circuits evolve and interact with cellular pathways. His current research interests include antimicrobial peptide resistance, adaptation to changes in oxygen availability, and commensal colonization of animal hosts. Goulian has been at the University of Pennsylvania since 2000, where he has held various academic positions including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
