Biography

Mark Heerink is an Associate Professor of Latin Literature at the University of Amsterdam, where he explores a wide range of topics in Classics and Ancient Studies. His academic journey began with a PhD from Leiden University in 2010, where he graduated cum laude. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cambridge and won the NWO VENI award in 2011. Heerink's teaching covers diverse aspects of Latin literature, including courses on Horace, Ovid, and Virgil, as well as Latin language acquisition. His research focuses on Hellenistic Greek and Roman poetry, applying modern literary theory to understand the dynamics of classical poetry. He has published extensively on various Greek and Latin poets, culminating in his monograph 'Echoing Hylas: A Study in Hellenistic and Roman Metapoetics', released by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2015. Currently, he is developing a research project that integrates metapoetics with ecocritical theory. His previous projects include an extensive study of Valerius Flaccus' 'Argonautica' and editing various scholarly volumes related to this work. Heerink serves as the chair of the Examinations Board in the Faculty of Humanities and is involved in multiple editorial and academic committees.
