Biography

Mark C. Hersam is a Joint Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. His research group focuses on the synthesis, purification, functionalization, and application of low-dimensional nanoelectronic materials, including monodisperse carbon nanotubes, graphene, plasmonic nanoparticles, transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, black phosphorus, and borophene. His work on surface chemical functionalization enables tunable properties in these materials, which facilitates advancements in thin-film transistors, memristors, transparent conductors, photovoltaics, and batteries. The Hersam Research Group also commercializes low-dimensional nanoelectronic materials through scalable nanomanufacturing methods, including various printing techniques. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship in 2014 and multiple fellowships from prestigious scientific organizations.
