Mark Herzik is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California San Diego. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2014. Following his doctoral studies, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Scripps Research Institute in 2018. His research is primarily focused on elucidating the molecular underpinnings that govern macromolecular transport within eukaryotic cells. His lab employs innovative cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) methodologies to provide atomic-level understanding of the structures and dynamics that govern complex biological processes. Currently, his research emphasizes developing and utilizing novel biophysical and biochemical methodologies to isolate transient protein complexes that are necessary for macromolecular transport to mitochondria and determining their three-dimensional structures using high-resolution cryo-EM techniques.
