Biography

Professor Mark Johnson is internationally known for his work on ocular biomechanics, particularly regarding the pathogenesis of glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. His research group employs bioengineering approaches utilizing perfusion studies, atomic force microscopy, and theoretical analysis in combination with high-resolution morphometry and finite element modeling. With over 40 years of experience, his studies have examined various physiological transport mechanics problems, including the flow of aqueous humor in outflow pathways related to glaucoma, the mechanics of arterial walls, and the transport properties of corneal tissue and macromolecular gels such as hyaluronic acid and Matrigel. Additionally, he investigates the transport within Bruch's membrane relative to cell mechanics.
