Biography

Mark Albert Johnston specializes in early modern drama, particularly the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, as well as children's drama, medical history, and gender studies/queer theories. He has published critical articles in prestigious journals such as English Literary History, Studies in English Literature, and Modern Philology. His notable works include 'Masculinity Metropolis Vice: London 1550-1650' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and 'Beard Fetish in Early Modern England: Sex, Gender, and the Registers of Value' (Routledge, 2011), which examines the cultural significance of facial hair in early modern constructions of sex and identity. Currently, he is co-editing a forthcoming collection of essays entitled 'Queering Childhood in Early Modern English Drama Culture' with Jennifer Higginbotham and continues to engage in research involving early modern English barber-surgeons.
