Mark Jones received his medical degree in 2006 from the University of Southampton, graduating with distinction in medical sciences and clinical sciences. He trained in general medicine and was awarded the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine, which developed his sub-specialty interest in the diagnosis and management of interstitial lung diseases. He was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship at the University of Southampton, completing his PhD under professors Donna Davies and Luca Richeldi, investigating early mechanisms of lung fibrosis. His research focuses on human fibrotic diseases and aims to define biological mechanisms that determine how the lung undergoes normal repair versus progressive fibrosis. Professor Jones integrates mechanistic studies, human biomimetic models, and multi-omics analyses to understand the biology of fibrosis initiation and identify biomarkers for progression, which informs therapeutic development. He also leads the clinical service for interstitial lung disease (ILD) at University Hospitals Southampton, where he works on optimizing patient care models and improving early diagnosis and treatment pathways for patients with fibrotic lung diseases.
