Biography

Mark Kambites obtained a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science (2000) and his Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics (2003) from the University of York. He has held research fellowships in Canada and Germany before joining the University of Manchester as an RCUK Academic Fellow in 2006. After completing his fellowship in 2011, he became a Senior Lecturer and was promoted to Reader in 2016 and subsequently to Professor of Pure Mathematics. He served as the Head of the Pure Mathematics Group from 2015 to 2019. Kambites is a central organizer of the North British Semigroups Applications Network and has served as an editor for the International Journal of Algebra and Computation. Currently, he is a member of the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) for Mathematical Sciences. His research interests encompass semigroup theory, tropical algebra and geometry, combinatorial geometric group theory, formal languages and automata, computational complexity, parallel processing, and cryptography.
