Biography

Mark S. Karlan has extensive experience in commercial real estate finance and investments, with a career spanning over 38 years. He has taught Real Estate Finance Investments to 4,000 students and currently teaches Real Estate Transactions at UCLA School of Law. Karlan served as a faculty advisor for the Anderson School's Applied Management Research field study program, which led to an MBA student team winning the Deloitte Consulting Award in 2014/2015. He was the Executive Managing Director at CBRE Global Investors from 2006 to 2011, where he was a member of the firm’s global Executive Committee and International Investment Committees. Karlan also founded and served as the President of a strategic partner fund with over $1.2 billion in assets under management. Before his tenure at CBRE, he founded Imperial Credit Commercial Mortgage Investment Corp., which became a top-performing mortgage REIT by 1997. Karlan launched his career at JMB Realty Corp. in Chicago, where he led the acquisition of numerous commercial properties. He holds degrees from Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, and Harvard College, receiving honors for his academic achievement and negotiation skills. Karlan is an active speaker at institutional private equity conferences and has served on the boards of various companies and philanthropic organizations.
