Biography

Mark Knight is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where he also serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies. His expertise encompasses buried pipeline soil-structure interaction, condition assessment, and renovation of buried municipal water and wastewater pipelines using trenchless technologies. Professor Knight has developed the System Dynamics Financially Sustainable Buried Infrastructure Asset Management tool, along with BoreAid and the PPI-PACE online tools which assist industry professionals in evaluating and selecting Polyethylene pipe for water distribution and transmission systems. He holds a patent for a Centrifugal Permeameter, which tests the permeant conductivity of porous samples. In addition, he has contributed as an editor to the chapter on Horizontal Directional Drilling in the publication “Trenchless Technology: Planning Equipment Methods” published in 2013. His research interests include trenchless technologies, buried infrastructure asset management, geotechnical engineering, centrifuge modeling and testing, unsaturated flow in soils, contaminant transport, pavement design, and field instrumentation.
