Dr. Mark Kushner

Biography

Mark J. Kushner is a distinguished professor specializing in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan. He has a rich academic background, holding a PhD and MS in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He also earned a BS in Nuclear Engineering and a BA in Astronomy from the University of California at Los Angeles, both with honors. His research focuses on Low Temperature Plasmas and encompasses areas such as Laser Physics Spectroscopy, Plasma Chemistry, Photochemical Materials Processing, and their applications in environmental and medical fields. As the director and founder of the Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering and a leader in plasma science engineering, he has been recognized with several prestigious awards including the Charles K. Birdsall Award from IEEE and membership in the National Academy of Engineering. His contributions to academia extend beyond research; he has held multiple roles in engineering education and leadership positions at various respected institutions, notably at Iowa State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With a wealth of experience in applied electromagnetics and power technologies, his work significantly advances the field of plasma science.
