Biography

Mark Letteney is an ancient historian and archaeologist whose work focuses on topics such as history, incarceration, book history, military occupation, and archaeological practices. He holds the Carol Thomas Endowed Professorship in Ancient History at the University of Washington, where he also serves as an affiliated faculty member of the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies and the Comparative Religion Program. Mark is actively involved in archaeological excavations, including serving as the assistant director for the excavation of the Roman 6th Legion in Israel, as well as co-directing the Solomon’s Pools Archaeological Project. His monograph titled 'Christianization of Knowledge in Late Antiquity: Intellectual and Material Transformations' was published by Cambridge University Press in October 2023 and examines how imperial Christianity influenced the scholarly practices of the 4th and 5th centuries CE. Furthermore, he is the author of the forthcoming book 'Ancient Mediterranean Incarceration', co-authored with Matthew D. C. Larsen, which presents a synthetic analysis of incarceration's ideology and experiences in the ancient Mediterranean basin.
