Dr. Mark Levitan

Biography

Mark Levitan is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. A native of New York, Levitan obtained his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, where he also completed his medical internship and ophthalmology residency at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn. He concluded his full-time training with a vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in 1991. Levitan has served as the retinal service director at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and has been a clinical assistant professor. He was part of the Wills Eye Hospital team in Philadelphia, where he taught ophthalmology residents. Since moving to Texas in 2002, he has joined Austin Retina and specializes in the medical and surgical management of diseases affecting the retina, vitreous, and macula, including conditions such as macular degeneration, macular holes, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy. In addition to his clinical work, Levitan has served as the principal investigator in nationally recognized clinical research studies involving novel pharmacological therapies and has lectured nationally, instructing retina specialists on the diagnosis and management of vitreoretinal pathology. He is also dedicated to community service, providing patient education seminars and lectures for medical professionals in Central Texas.
