Biography

Mark Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Victoria. He holds the Gilbert Betty Kennedy Chair in Mathematical Biology and conducts research focused on mathematical problems in spatial ecology. His interdisciplinary work employs a variety of approaches, including the analysis of nonlinear mathematical models and extensive fieldwork. Professor Lewis leads the Lewis Research Group, which focuses on several key areas, including animal movement modeling, ecological dynamics in aquatic systems, population spread of invasive species, and wildlife disease modeling. Current projects include exploring animal movement using both continuous and discrete-time models, studying ecological dynamics of polar bear populations, and modeling the dynamics of diseases in wildlife. His research also examines the management of spot prawn populations, the risk posed by zebra mussels, and the ecological impacts of climate change on various species. The Lewis Research Group actively contributes to understanding complex biological systems through mathematical insights.
