Biography

Mark Linne is an experimentalist specializing in reacting flow-fields, including sprays and combustion fuel cells, and advanced flow-field measurement techniques such as laser and x-ray based methods. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Linne worked as a laser development scientist at Spectra-Physics Inc. where he developed commercially available diode-pumped solid state lasers. His research contributions include two patents awarded for innovations in this area. He has held professorships at institutions such as the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Lund, and he is currently a professor at the University of Edinburgh. Throughout his career, Linne has been actively involved in developing fiberoptic-based absorption and fluorescence probes, short-pulse degenerate four-wave mixing pump/probe absorption spectroscopy, and novel imaging techniques. Currently, he is researching short pulse coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy in collaboration with Sandia Labs, focusing on thermodynamic state changes in liquid/gas systems such as fuel sprays. As the Chair of Combustion Engines at Edinburgh, Linne leads the development of new labs that target novel internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles and focuses on direct-injected engines and spray physics.
