Biography

Mark Locicero is an Honorary Research Member with extensive experience in archaeological excavations and survey projects across central Italy, Sicily, Jordan, Serbia, and Bulgaria. He emphasizes the importance of teaching in investigating the ancient Mediterranean world and has led courses at Leiden University in the Netherlands, Augsburg University in Germany, and the University of British Columbia (UBC). Locicero is keen on further developing his pedagogical skills to make explorations of the ancient Mediterranean world accessible. His research interests focus on archaeology, specifically Roman urbanism, ancient water and sewer systems, and sustainable resource usage in the past and present. One of his current projects examines the role of water in Roman North Africa, particularly in the Roman city of Volubilis, located in modern Morocco. This city has a long history of interactions with water, from the Hellenistic to the Early Islamic period. His research involves the detailed analysis of the city’s water supply and drainage systems, contextualizing it within wider environmental and social forces to create a holistic understanding of local approaches to water usage.
