Biography

Dr. Lowell’s interest in emergency medicine and emergency medical services began during his undergraduate years at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he received EMT certification and worked for the New Orleans Police Department and East Jefferson Hospital EMS. He is the founder of Tulane Emergency Medical Services, one of the first student-run on-campus EMS services in the nation. After graduating from New York University School of Medicine in 1986, he completed training in Internal Medicine at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals followed by an additional residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He served as the Medical Director for several ground-based EMS services in the Cincinnati area before joining the University of Michigan to develop its academic Department of Emergency Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Lowell has overseen ground EMS programs in Southeast Michigan, serving as the Medical Director of the Survival Flight program at the University of Michigan. He remains clinically active in the Adult Emergency Department and plays a vital role in supervision and education of medical students and residents. He serves on the Clinical Care Review Committee at Michigan Medicine and is a senior examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
