Dr. Mark Lurie

Biography

Mark Lurie is a Professor of Epidemiology at Brown University and an expert in infectious disease epidemiology with a focus on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, silicosis, and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa. He earned his BA in Political Science and Film Studies from Boston University, followed by a Masters Degree in African History from the University of Florida, and a PhD in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Lurie joined the Brown faculty in 2003 and has held numerous grants examining the dynamics of HIV epidemics and the role of migration in the spread of diseases. His recent initiatives include directing the International Health Institute and establishing the Brown Center for Mobility Analysis Pandemic Prevention Strategies (MAPPS). His work is characterized by a strong emphasis on ethical considerations in research and collaborations with institutions such as the University of Cape Town. Lurie's teaching includes various courses on epidemiological methods and the global perspectives of pandemics, showcasing his dedication to mentor the next generation of public health professionals.
