Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD, is a prominent economist whose work addresses a wide range of strategies and policy reforms aimed at improving health care. His efforts include payment reforms that promote better outcomes at lower costs, as well as the development of methods that leverage real-world evidence. He has been involved in creating effective drug and device innovation approaches. McClellan has held significant positions including administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, where he developed and implemented major health policy reforms. Additionally, he served as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the Treasury. With experience as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, McClellan also has an academic background where he has held a professorship in economics and medicine at Stanford University, directing the Program in Health Outcomes Research. Currently, he serves as a professor of practice in economics at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.
