Biography

Mark McDonald is recognized for his sensitive interpretations across a wide range of repertoire styles, from early music to avant-garde compositions. He holds music degrees and diplomas in organ and harpsichord performance from McGill University, Queen’s University, and the University of the Arts Bremen. Having studied under renowned teachers, he has also taught courses in music theory and musicianship at various institutions, including the Schulich School of Music at McGill University and the McGill Conservatory. A prominent organist and harpsichordist, McDonald has performed extensively worldwide and participated in international competitions such as Musashino-Tokyo (2017) and the Arp Schnitger Competition in which he won 3rd prize in 2014. He was featured as an artist in various festivals, including the Annual Festivals of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. His doctoral research focused on the avant-garde composer Bengt Hambraeus and was published in 2017. McDonald has taught at the University of Victoria since 2021, playing a significant role in the music community.
