Biography

Mark McGurl holds the Albert Guérard Professorship in Literature at Stanford University, where he has taught since 2011. His scholarly work focuses on the relationship between literature and social, educational institutions from the late 19th century to the present. He is the author of 'The Program Era: Postwar Fiction and the Rise of Creative Writing' and has received the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism. His latest book, 'Everything Fiction: A Age' was published by Verso in 2021 and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism. McGurl’s earlier work includes 'Novel Art: Elevations of American Fiction from Henry James to the Present'. He has contributed published articles to journals such as Critical Inquiry, Representations, American Literary History, and New Literary History. He earned his BA from Harvard University and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Johns Hopkins University, where he also received fellowships from the Office of the President of the University of California and the Stanford Humanities Center. Between 1997 and 2011, he served as a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles.
