Biography

Professor Mark Miodownik is a renowned expert in Materials and Society at University College London. He received his Ph.D. in turbine jet engine alloys from Oxford University in 1996. With over twenty years of experience, Mark has championed the integration of materials research with the arts, humanities, medicine, and engineering materials science. His efforts culminated in the establishment of the UCL Institute of Making, where he serves as Director and oversees an innovative research programme. Mark leads the Plastic Waste Innovation Hub, focusing on addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste through research on biodegradable plastics and product reuse and repairability. He is an internationally recognized broadcaster and author of 'Stuff Matters,' a New York Times bestselling book, which earned him the Royal Society Winton Prize in 2014 and the National Academies Communication Award in 2015. He has received numerous accolades, including being elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014, awarded the American Association for the Advancement of Science Prize for Public Engagement with Science in 2015, and the Faraday Medal from the Royal Society in 2017. In 2018, he was honored with an MBE for his services to materials science, engineering, and broadcasting. In 2022, he received the Thornton Medal from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
