Biography

Mark Miodownik is a Professor of Materials and Society at University College London, where he leads the establishment of the UCL Institute of Making. He completed his Ph.D. focusing on turbine jet engine alloys at Oxford University in 1996. With over twenty years of experience, he has worked extensively as a materials engineer across the USA, Ireland, and the UK. His research bridges materials science with the arts, humanities, and medicine. Miodownik set up the Plastic Waste Innovation Hub to address environmental challenges posed by plastic waste, exploring topics such as biodegradable plastics, product reuse, and repairability. He is also a recognized broadcaster and writer, known for advocating in engineering and materials science through popular TV programs. His written work, including the bestselling book 'Stuff Matters,' has garnered multiple awards, including the Royal Society Winton Prize in 2014 and the National Academies Communication Award in 2015. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014 and has received accolades such as the Faraday Medal in 2017 and an MBE in 2018 for his services to materials science and broadcasting. Most recently, he was awarded the Thornton Medal in 2022 by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
