Biography

Mark Mooseker is the Ross Granville Harrison Professor at Yale University, specializing in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. His research predominantly focuses on the molecular functional organization of the cell's cytoskeleton, particularly investigating the characteristics and functions of myosins, which are actin-filament based molecular motors. His laboratory has identified 24 distinct classes of molecular motors, extending beyond the well-known myosins found in muscle and non-muscle cells. Current research projects include assessing the myosin functions in selected cell lines and conducting biochemical and biophysical assessments of their motor properties. Furthermore, Mooseker's group is involved in investigating myosin-dependent organelle transport and membrane traffic along with phenotypic analyses of myosin mutants in model organisms such as mouse and Drosophila. His work indicates that myosins play critical roles in various signal transduction pathways due to the diverse protein domains identified in the tail regions of these motors.
