Dr. Mark Neal

Biography

Mark Anthony Neal is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African & African American Studies and Chair of the Department at Duke University. He specializes in courses addressing Black Masculinity, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities. His signature courses include topics on Michael Jackson and Black Performance Tradition, as well as the history of Hip-Hop culture, and he collaborates with Grammy Award-winning producer 9th Wonder. Over his academic career, he has published numerous articles exploring the intersection of race, music, and culture, contributing significant insights into Afro-American studies and modern media's impact on identity. Neal has also been recognized for his work in various awards and has a notable presence in academic discussions surrounding race and popular culture.
