Biography

Mark Neil studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge while pursuing his Ph.D. in Optical Information Processing within the Engineering Department. Moving to the Department of Engineering Science at Oxford University, he continued his work in Optics as a post-doctoral researcher and college lecturer. Joining the Photonics Group in the Physics Department at Imperial in 2002, he became a Professor in 2009. His broad academic background allows him to work on multidisciplinary projects alongside engineers, medics, chemists, and biologists to tackle diverse problems, including studying the inner workings of cancer cells and the manufacture of mirrors for the next generations of extremely large astronomical telescopes. Imaging, microscopy, and metrology are mainstays of his work, underpinning technologies that enable the control of light and contribute to the changing view of potential applications for optical systems. He has commercial activity with industrial connections, particularly with Aurox Ltd, where he serves as Principal Scientist and Director, involved in the development of affordable 3-D microscopy systems.
