Biography

Mark W. Nelson is the SC Johnson Family Professor of Management at Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management within the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. He received his BBA from Iowa State University and both MA and PhD degrees from Ohio State University. His teaching focuses on intermediate financial accounting and financial reporting, with particular emphasis on judgment and decision-making in accounting. Nelson has been recognized with 12 teaching awards from both Cornell University and Ohio State University, including the American Accounting Association's inaugural Cook Prize for graduate teaching excellence. He co-authored the book 'Intermediate Accounting' with Spiceland and Winchel. His research delves into the psychological and economic factors that influence how individuals make decisions regarding financial information and how they interpret and apply accounting, auditing, and tax regulations, as well as their engagement in financial markets. He has published extensively in accounting and psychology journals and has received several honors, including the AAA's Notable Contribution to Accounting Literature Award, AAA's Wildman Medal, and the Johnson School's Faculty Research Award. Nelson has held leadership roles, including serving as Dean of the Johnson School from 2016 to 2023, overseeing various academic programs and strategic partnerships.
