Biography

Mark Nuttall is a social anthropologist whose work focuses on societies and environments in the circumpolar North and northern Europe. He has conducted extensive anthropological research and fieldwork in locations such as Greenland, Canada, Finland, Alaska, Scotland, and Wales, with interests extending to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. His research concerns include environmental history and the impacts of weather and climate, environmental change, resource use in rural and coastal communities, the interplay of energy and extractive industries, and the significance of place and identity in borderlands and post-industrial landscapes. Nuttall studied sociology and social anthropology at the University of Aberdeen and obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge. He was appointed Professor and Henry Marshall Tory Chair in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta in 2003. Prior to moving to Canada, he was a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen, where he held a Personal Chair. His academic career also includes positions at the University of Edinburgh, Brunel University, and the University of Cambridge, as well as serving as a Distinguished Professor at the Thule Institute, University of Oulu. He has been a Senior Associate with the Stefansson Arctic Institute in Akureyri, Iceland, and is a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America at the University of Calgary, as well as a member of the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research. Nuttall was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2008.
