Dr. Mark Olson

Biography

Mark J.V. Olson is an Associate Professor of Practice in Visual & Media Studies in the Department of Art, History & Visual Studies at Duke University. His work integrates art and science, particularly through innovative digital methodologies in the arts and humanities. Olson has been actively involved in the Duke initiative for Digital Art History and Visual Culture, contributing extensively to projects aimed at enhancing the intersection of these fields. He has received recognition for his research and his role as a principal investigator in various prominent projects, including a significant grant from the J. Paul Getty Trust to bring public awareness to hidden histories through digital exhibitions. His publications often explore the intersections of ancient artifacts, medical education, and digital humanities, showcasing a deep commitment to studying how visual culture shapes and informs historical narratives. Olson's initiatives also include leading research labs focused on speculative art and science, providing interdisciplinary platforms for creative experimentation.
