Biography

Mark Payne is the Chester D. Tripp Professor in the Department of Classics and Comparative Literature at The University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2003. His research interests include poetry and poetics, animal and plant studies, and ecology. He has published extensively in the fields of Greek and Roman literature, with a particular focus on lyric and didactic poetry and comedy. His published works include three notable books: 'Theocritus Invention Fiction' (Cambridge University Press, 2007), 'Animal Part: Human Animals Poetic Imagination' (The University of Chicago Press, 2010), which won the 2011 Warren-Brooks Award for Outstanding Literary Criticism, and 'Hontology: Depressive Anthropology Shame Life' (Zero Books, 2018). His latest work, 'Flowers of Time / Post-Apocalyptic Fiction,' was published by Princeton University Press in 2020. Mark Payne is also recognized for his contributions to academic discourse, having written the foreword for poet Stephanie Burt’s 'Callimachus Lockert Poetry Translation' series. His recent publications explore themes of shared life, ethics in Pindar, and the relationship between poetry and vegetality, among others.
