Mark Pinese is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of New South Wales, where he leads the Genomic Childhood Cancer Risk Team at the Children's Cancer Institute. His research focuses on the genomic basis of childhood cancer risk. Pinese completed his undergraduate studies at UNSW Australia, specializing in biology and aging, before moving to the Garvan Institute to pursue cancer research. There, he was involved in one of the world's largest sequencing efforts for pancreatic cancer and earned a PhD in molecular determinants of survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. At the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics, he performed rapid-turnaround genomic analyses for cancer patients and contributed to the development of Australia's first clinically-accredited whole genome sequencing test for rare diseases. Pinese has also led the analysis of the Medical Genome Reference Bank, which is the largest genome sequencing cohort of elderly individuals globally. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several awards and he is currently supported by the NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellowship.
