Biography

Mark Rau is an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, holding a shared appointment in the Music & Theater Arts Section and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He completed his Ph.D. at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). In addition to his academic work, he holds a Master of Arts in Music, Science, and Technology from Stanford University, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics along with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz from McGill University. His research interests encompass musical acoustics, including vibration and acoustic measurement, audio signal processing, and physical modeling synthesis. As a lifelong guitarist, his research often focuses on topics related to guitars and the audio effects used with them. Mark's combined passion for physical design and making has led to an interest in luthiery, which in turn guides his research on musical instrument acoustics, measurement, and modeling.
