Biography

Mark Richard joined the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University in Fall 2010 and serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. He previously held the position of Lenore Stern Professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Tufts University. His areas of specialization include Philosophy of Language, Social Philosophy, Philosophical Logic, Metaphysics, and Epistemology. Richard has published several significant works, including 'Propositional Attitudes' (1990), 'Meaning' (2002), 'Truth Gives' (2008), and 'Meanings as Species' (2019). He has also produced numerous articles addressing topics like semantics, vagueness, and linguistic pragmatics, as well as foundational issues in semantics. His current research focuses on how gender, racial, religious, and social identities are constructed and policed, and the possibilities and limits for their transformation. Richard has been a member of the Climate Working Group since 2013. In addition to his academic pursuits, he enjoys hiking and cooking, and has interests in collage-making and woodworking.
