Biography

Mark Richards is a geophysicist whose research primarily focuses on the relationship between interior processes of the Earth and surface manifestations such as plate tectonics and volcanism. His work has significantly enhanced the understanding of the relationship between the shape of the Earth's gravity field, the history of global plate motions, and the genesis of hotspot island chains like those in Hawaii and the Galapagos. Additionally, he studies the role of volcanic islands in biological evolution, as well as the nature of some of the Earth's largest volcanic eruptions and flood basalts, such as the Deccan Traps and Columbia River Basalts. He is recognized nationally for his efforts to diversify the ranks of doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty within the mathematical and physical sciences.
