Biography

Mark Schlissel received his A.B. with honors in Biochemical Sciences from Princeton University in 1979 and earned M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1986. He began his career at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as a faculty member in 1991. In 1999, he became an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, advancing to full professor in 2002. He has taught courses in immunology and biology for undergraduate and graduate students and has conducted pivotal research on B lymphocytes, a critical component of the immune system. Schlissel has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific papers and trained 21 doctoral candidates in his lab. He served as the President of the University of Michigan from 2014 to 2022 and held notable positions such as dean of the biological sciences at UC-Berkeley and C.H. Li Chair in Biochemistry. Schlissel has received numerous accolades including election to the American Society for Clinical Investigators and the American Association of Physicians, and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
