Mark Schmuckler completed dual degrees in music (piano performance) and psychology during his undergraduate studies. He was hired in his second year to conduct auditory psychoacoustics research with Dr. Richard E. Pastore and later undertook an independent study project on duplex perception of musical stimuli. This experience spurred his interest in psychology as it relates to music, leading him to pursue a Ph.D. at Cornell University under Carol Krumhansl, where he also became fascinated by infant development. After completing his Ph.D. in 1987, he held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia to study infant development and music perception. He began his tenure at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) in 1993, where he has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and served in administrative roles such as Vice-Dean Undergraduate since July 2013. His research specializes in infant perceptual-action coupling and pitch perception in music, continuing to investigate these areas throughout his academic career.
