Biography

Mark Seto leads a wide-ranging musical life as a conductor, musicologist, and violinist. He is the Director of the Brown University Orchestra and an Associate Teaching Professor of Music at Brown University, where he teaches courses in music history, theory, and conducting. As the Artistic Director and Conductor of The Chelsea Symphony in New York City, Seto has strengthened the orchestra's commitment to new music programming with dozens of world premieres. His tenure includes notable performances such as the Lincoln Center red carpet premiere for the Golden Globe-winning Amazon Original series starring Gael García Bernal. Seto's research as a musicologist focuses on issues of influence, nationalism, and cultural identity in fin-de-siècle Paris, with publications in reputable journals and his involvement in preparing performance materials for significant works by underrepresented composers. He earned his BA in Music from Yale University and his MA, MPhil, and PhD in Historical Musicology from Columbia University. Seto's background in conducting includes training at the Pierre Monteux School and mentorship from distinguished conductors. He is the recipient of the Yale Friends Music Prize and the ASCAP Morton Gould award.
