S. Mark Spearing is the Vice-President of Research and Enterprise at the University of Southampton. He is responsible for research, enterprise, and knowledge exchange activities at the university. Previously, he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) and was the Head of the School of Engineering Sciences. Spearing joined the University of Southampton as a Professor of Engineering Materials in July 2004. He held a previous position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics from 1994 to 2004, where he received tenure in 2001 and was promoted to Full Professorship in 2004. His research interests include materials, processes in structural design, micro- and nano-systems, and structural health monitoring of advanced composites. His current focus involves using high-resolution computed tomography to explore damage and failure mechanisms in advanced composite materials, aiming to develop models that inform material development and design. Spearing is a trustee of the Faraday Institution and a member of the UKRI Infrastructure Advisory Committee. He chairs the Fellowship Evaluation Panel of the Singapore National Research Foundation. He is also a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Composite Materials, with over 200 technical publications and more than 130 in archival journals. Additionally, he holds five patents.
