Biography

Mark Tan Kiak Min is currently an Associate Professor in Medical Ethics at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. Before joining Monash University Malaysia, Mark was a member of the Medical Ethics & Law Department of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the Founding Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee at Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah UiTM. He holds a BMedSc(Hons) degree in medical education and an MBBChBAO undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Ireland. He completed an MA in Bioethics and Medical Law at St. Mary's University, London, with a dissertation focusing on advocating for legislations on advance decisions in Malaysia. Mark obtained his Doctorate in Bioethics (DBe) from Loyola University Chicago, pursuing dual concentrations in Clinical Ethics and Public Health & Systems Ethics. A certified Healthcare Ethics Consultant, Mark has pioneered clinical ethics in Malaysia, co-founding the Malaysian Bioethics Community (MBC) and the Clinical Ethics Malaysia (CEM) initiative in 2020. He has been instrumental in setting up various Hospital Ethics Committees and Clinical Ethics Committees across multiple hospitals. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he participates at both national and international levels, serving on the National Bioethics Council of Malaysia and the Expert Working Group for developing clinical ethics guidelines. He is a member of the editorial boards for several journals, including the Asian Bioethics Review. Mark advocates for mentoring students in the areas of bioethics and medical law, and actively supervises PhD students in related fields.
