Biography

Mark Thachuk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia. His research interests center on the dynamics of chemical reactions and processes, employing mathematical and computational techniques. Thachuk's group focuses on collision-induced alignment of gas-phase ions and the mechanisms of dissociation in gas-phase protein complexes. They investigate how ions and molecules in gas can move preferentially in certain directions through the application of external electric fields, developing preferred alignment during their motion. Current projects involve studying collision-induced alignment of non-linear ions and determining dissociation mechanisms of gas-phase protein complexes that display charge asymmetry. Thachuk's work combines molecular dynamics simulations with experimental techniques to understand these complex systems. He aims to create simplified models that capture the essential physics of the processes without resorting to atomistic-level simulations.
