Biography

Mark E. Thompson graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, earning a B.S. in Chemistry in 1980. He obtained his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry under the guidance of Professor John E. Bercaw. Following this, Thompson conducted research as a Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (S.E.R.C.) Research Fellow in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at Oxford University, where he collaborated with Professor Malcolm L. H. Green on the investigation of specific properties of organometallic materials. In 1987, post-S.E.R.C. fellowship, Thompson began his academic career as an assistant professor at Princeton University. He moved to the University of Southern California in 1995 and currently holds the Ray R. Irani Chair of Chemistry. From 2005 to 2008, he served as the Chairman of the Chemistry Department at USC.
