Biography

Mark M.A.C. van Ostaijen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He serves as the Managing Director of the LDE Centre Governance Migration Diversity. He is a recipient of the VIDI grant and conducts international comparative research focused on decision-making among 'street-level workers' in superdiverse European cities. His research projects include ethnographic studies of 'smart urban intermediaries' in neighborhoods across Amsterdam, Glasgow, Birmingham, and Copenhagen. Van Ostaijen earned his PhD with a dissertation titled 'Worlds words', which was awarded ‘Best PhD thesis’ by the Erasmus Graduate School. He has been actively involved in the IMISCOE PhD network and has served on the Organizing Committee for the Interpretive Policy Analysis (IPA) conference in Leicester, UK. He has published a book titled 'Wij zijn ons. Een kleine sociologie van grote denkers' and has contributed as a columnist for De Volkskrant. His academic interests lie at the intersection of policy, politics, and society, particularly as they relate to migration and urban studies.
