Biography

Professor Vogelsberger is a theoretical astrophysicist whose research interests broadly cover structure formation in galaxies, dark matter physics, and large-scale hydrodynamical simulations. His work extensively utilizes numerical simulations through high-performance supercomputers. He is a key architect of the Illustris simulation, which features over 40,000 galaxies whose properties closely match observational data. Vogelsberger is also involved in the development of new methods to enhance current galaxy formation models, including innovative numerical techniques for simulating anisotropic thermal conduction in galaxy clusters and the effects of cosmological magnetic fields on galaxy formation. His research on dark matter includes exploring alternative models, such as self-interacting dark matter, and developing a framework called ETHOS to efficiently map particle physics models onto effective structure formation parameters. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Mainz and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Munich and the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in 2010.
