Biography

Mark Weal is a Professor in the Digital Health Biomedical Engineering Group at the University of Southampton. He serves as the Co-Director of the Web Science Institute and the Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Web Science Innovation, and is a Fellow member of the Web Science Trust. His research focuses on digital health, particularly in the development of online public health interventions for weight management, hand hygiene, smoking cessation, and chronic illness management, including diabetes, cancer, and respiratory conditions. He is actively involved in multidisciplinary projects, including the LifeGuide initiative, aimed at advancing behaviour change through the application of semantic web technologies and pervasive systems. Mark has extensive experience in information systems, hypermedia systems, and eLearning infrastructures, which is evident from his work with the Equator IRC. His research interests also encompass the integration of data for disaster management and the enhancement of digital systems for better health outcomes.
