Biography

Mark Westneat is a Professor in the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on organismal biology, particularly in studying phylogenetic relationships among major coral reef fish groups and investigating the biomechanics and functional morphology of organisms. He employs a range of techniques, including molecular phylogenetics and computer modeling of detailed biomechanics to resolve phylogenetic relationships and understand the evolutionary functions of various organisms. His lab integrates different aspects of biology and welcomes students interested in evolution, biomechanics, and phylogenetics, particularly regarding fishes and coral reefs. Mark earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from Duke University and has conducted postdoctoral research in neurobiology, solidifying his expertise in functional morphology and evolutionary biology.
